World's Best Pair of Socks

Apparently, these are the world's best* cotton-acrylic crew socks. At least I hope they are since they cost $195 for three pairs.

Get them here.

The new Skinny Jeans?

Apparently, fat jeans are the new skinny jeans. At least that is the message I am getting from these Acne jeans at Net-a-porter. Acne is very love-it or hate-it for me.

Eyes...dreams

I tried to follow the rabbit's hole of links all the way to the source of these amazing little things, but it sort of dead-ended me so I'm really not sure who made them. I love them. It's the eyes. The lower lashes. And the cheeks. OK it's everything about them. Love. Sometimes I save things like this with the vague dream of making something similar one day, and needless to say I never do. Still dreaming.

Yep

Ugh! J'Adore!

This skirt is perfection, but WHY must it be $1810? Because if it weren't, I would own it. This skirt looks like the kind of thing that you might find in a vintage shop on a very, very good day.

Why Thank You!

Dear Dolce & Gabanna,

This is exactly how I want to dress my toddler: in a tshirt with a "status bag" on it! Thanks a bunch.

Your Friend,

Margaret

Liveblogging the Golden Globes

I received many, many requests from readers to liveblog the Golden Globes, but I have too many projects going on to properly liveblog the event. Instead I'm going to post a few hits & misses.

Most glamorous couple, Josh Brolin & Diane Lane. They are a real throwback to old Hollywood. (It kind of fascinates me that when they first were out there as a couple, Diane was the heavy hitter. Now Josh has come into his own and probably surpassed her status.) Also Josh appears to be wearing his own shoes here, since they look like they have actually been worn before (!!!!) unlike all other shoes on the red carpet:

Least glamorous couple, the guy who plays Golumb in Lord of the Rings and his date. You know, I don't really care if you play Golumb, that is no excuse for appearing like this in public! And the shoes! On both of them!:

Worst-dressed actress. Everything about it is terrible. Whoever let her appear in public in this dress (which makes her look like a gym teacher), necklace (too big, too plain), and hair (too dark) should be fired:

No idea who this is but her superchic outfit is going to help raise her profile (as today's New York Times Style article describes):

Nicole Ritchie has jumped the shark. She looks like a an 80s actress/callgirl/aerobics video star:

J'adore Salma Hayek. She is perfection. Francois Pinault is clearly a genius, and not just because he is wearing this precious foulard!

Jessica Biel...why are you dressed in vintage a Jessica McClintock Gunne Sax dress? Also, your shoes are too small (not sexy):

Emma Stone, clearly the fashion favorite in Lanvin. And she told the crazy NBC interviewer "I built a lot of websites when I was young." (In other words, she is still really young....it was not possible to build a website when I was young.) Anyway, very chic:

Dianna Agron, no. Just no.

It's official: Nicole Kidman's face is not longer human.

I have no idea what Paula Patton does other than be married to the soul singing son of Alan Thicke, but she seems like she would be the nicest person at the Globes:

Owen Wilson and Mom. This look kills in Palm Beach but not so hot on the red carpet. Kind of love her for keeping it real though.

Jodie Foster looks amazing, a Jodie Foster kind of way. For the record I have not seen her Beaver either.

Michelle Williams looks fine (not her best look). However, my three year old would love her headband.

Lastly, say hello to your mother for me.

Next Best

Since I couldn't get these, I went for these Dieppa Restrepo boots. They're good, a matte leather with a very slim fit around the ankle and absolutely no extra decorations. I find that, except with the very best quality footwear, buckles tend to look cheap and it really brings it all down. They zip up which again can make boots look cheap, but the zipper is nicely hidden so it works well. So I'm pretty happy with them but I'd still get the Clergeries if I could!

Starman

Rock 'n' Roll intarsia*?

Bowie sweater from Bella Freud

Always add leather:

(Gloves from Gilt.com and long since off their site. How annoying is Gilt? Why can't they keep stuff up for longer? I know it's supposed to be "exclusive" but it's really way too difficult to shop on the site. Things sell out, if you need to exchange for a different size it's too late, their return fees are really high, and it all just creates a lot of frustration.)

*Clearly I need to make intarsia a category on this blog since it's a recurring theme

Admitted

Kelly Wearstler is crazy as a loon and absolutely believes her own hype (and then some), but girlfriend has a good eye. No denying it.

Something (OK, a lot of things) about her clothing line isn't working for me, though.

And can someone please tell her that nobody says things like "My Vibe. My Life."

P.S. Long ago, an Australian friend pointed out that, for an American, the correct way to pronounce the ubiquitous Aussie greeting "G'Day" is by saying "good eye", not "gid-day". He said he figured it out when he went to a baseball game in NYC and everyone was shouting "Good Eye!" to a player and he wondering why a lot of Aussies were saying hello. Just so you know.

Hypothetically Speaking

If you were to happen upon an unworn pair of 1973 Nike sneakers in in Oregon state colors in pristine condition, you would have found The Oregon Waffle, the first running sneaker Nike released. And you could resell them on ebay for $1525.76. Just saying.

In Case You Were Wondering

This is exactly how I dress when picking my child up at preschool.

Jolly & Green

This picture keeps turning up on various blogs & sites I visit. Although the greenery here is realistic for someone living with small children (hello, cactus that looks like a bowl full of fuzzy toys), the overall look is great. There is just a great hippie feeling about the abundance and variety of plants (none of them flowering!) and the simple, worn furninshings.

Also, this apartment has a large skylight just like ours, and plenty of sprinkler pipes running across the ceiling, conveniently offering a perfect spot to hang things. Every year I tell myself I'm going to buy a bunch of plants but I never do. What's really absurd is we live only three blocks from the flower district where there is a pretty good selection of plants for sale also.

Maybe 2012 will be the year.

J'Adore

For the love of all things holy, please someone buy these Clergerie boots, they are virtually perfect. And half off.

UPDATE: Readers have asked how to wear these boots. They can of course work with straight-legged pants & jeans, but I think they would be best with slim or skinny pants/jeans, and definitely with skirts and dresses. Try with opaque black tights, or even with bare legs. This will modernize a more traditional dress, add some street style to a girly flowery dress, and add some interest to a simple style. Really these boots are perfect and Clergerie has a timeless appeal.

I Mean....

Santa Claus duties required me to do some heavy research into Ariel costumes, leading me to stumble upon this disturbing item. Retailing for a mere $894 on Disney's website. And to make matters even more disturbing, people have actually bought this because there are product reviews for it!

Shudder.

In other related news, my research also revealed that there is a sizeable industry (on Etsy, of course) of mermaid costumes for infants. As in newborns. You already know how I feel about infant costumes, and the fact that this child is asleep makes this just a little bit stranger.

Even worse is this shot which makes the sound-asleep baby look like part of a seafood buffet:

And here we can see that having the baby awake does do a little to mitigate the weirdness of a crocheted tail & bikini top combo:

And on a final note, look what the tide brought in?!

Booted

Yeah, so as I was saying, it's great to see a stylish person in an achievable look. One that works in real life and is practical enough to walk around the city in. Unfortunately I discovered that the lynchpin of said outfit, the clunky yet chic boots, are Chanel. Kind of kills the realistic part. Because even if you were willing to shell out $1500 for the boots, what fool would want to broadcast that choice by wearing the double Cs on their boots? Plus, Chanel hasn't really been the same since Lindsey Lohan hijacked the brand for her high class hooker look.

But dammit I really did love those boots.
