Unloading the Fancy

Things in fancytown are fancy, but not nearly as fancy as they used to be. Life with two toddlers does not require the same wardrobe as 9-5 in the fashion/magazine world, not to mention the decrease in nightlife fashion opportunities. Also, one is (ahem) getting a little older since life before kids, and some items just aren't all that appealing (or worse, appropriate) any longer. Last of all, and most tragic, my feet got bigger with each pregnancy, meaning I now have to part with dozens of pairs of amazing shoes carefully picked out from sales over the years...Manolos, Louboutins, Chloes, Marc Jacobs...it's painful but I am finally facing it. I've consigned stuff for years, at Ina and Tokio 7, but dragging it there is impractical not that I have so much stuff to get rid of. And of course dealing with the attitude problem at Ina is almost unbearable (I mean, it's a used clothing store---how can they be so snobby?!) Somehow I heard about TheRealReal, a new online resale company. I'm still kind of skeptical--but at this point I just want to get everything OUT of my apartment! They come to your apartment (if you are in NYC or LA) and take everything away, and then give you 60% of the selling price. (I managed to snag 70% by signing up before June 15, and I think that might really add up since I'm consigning so much.) The site operates like Gilt, with limited sales of specific brands that "expire", although the "contemporary" brands are always available. I personally don't see why they are doing it that way, it seems like having things up all the time and just searchable by brand would be better. They could also do a Net-A-Porter thing and send out email alerts with new arrivals from brands you select. But like I said--I just need this stuff out of my house so I'm going with it! Oh, and what makes them really great for consigning is that they take both winter and summer clothes and sell them all year round. P.S. Elton John's closet
